Kelir is a white rectangular screen used as a background in the shadow puppet. The screen is made of cloth material that the Javanese people often call mekao. This material was chosen because it is not too slippery so if the puppet attached to the screen will not easily shake to the right and to the left, and the puppeteer can control the motion of the puppet easily.

On all sides of the screen are decorated with black cloth, with a particular curve. The upper side is referred to as pelangitan (Jv: langit: sky) while the bottom side is called palemahan (Jv: lemah: ground).
